Look for the US House of Representatives introducing a bill called the "Black Box Privacy Protection Act". What? What is that? Huh?

The bill will protect motorcyclists' rights by requiring dealers to prominently disclose to consumers if an event data recorder is installed in their motorcycle, its data collection capabilities, and how the data can be used. The bill clarifies that the owner owns the data and cannot be accessed without the permission of the owner. It also allows the owner to turn the data recording feature off.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a "Notice of Proposed Rulemaking" requiring black boxes installed in all cars manufactured after September 1, 2014. The NHTSA already has disclosure requirements in the proposed rule, but the House Bill goes further.

AMA supports the bill. Your privacy and your ability to control the use of the data (including preventing your insurance company or the government from accessing it without your permission) is an important issue here.

You have control of the data unless the government gets a search warrant for it. This is often done in serious car collisions when there are injuries or fatalities. They seize car or motorcycle. If the law allows it to be removed I would suggest doing that, if you care.

In recent years the govt. needed special software to download the data and would typically get the cooperation of dealers. I'm sure technology will allow or allows the information to be downloaded remotely. It didn't used to be available (4 years ago) but technology changes fast.

Who knows, perhaps the FISA court has allowed govt. access to this as well and we won't learn about it until a contract NSA worker who rides a motorcycle reveals it? Just sayin'
