Elliott,

Did your SPOT device fail?

Steve,

Yes, I have called their Technical Support several times since purchasing it a couple months ago, and it still does not perform consistently. Per their directions, I will be taking it back to REI, and exchanging it for a new one, unless I decide to return it, but then I'll have a fight getting my subscription money back.

Elliott, one problem I have seen with the Spot hardware is the positive battery terminals. I have had to "spring" mine out a little to make sure it stays in good contact with the positive cap on the AAA battery. I think part of the problem is variation in the length of the positive cap on AAA batteries. It either won't turn on at times or turns itself off while tracking. Using it on a motorcycle doesn't help with the constant vibration. You might try that before going to the trouble of returning it.

All,

Have exchanged my SPOT Device with a new one this afternoon, so we'll see how it goes. May ride to Tucson and back this weekend to 1. Test the new SPOT Device, and 2. Put a few hot weather miles on in preparation for July. I'm also going to have some Driving Lights installed and p/u some highway pegs.

Let me know your Gila Bend ETA. I'll try to meet up with at the McDonald's or someplace.
Don't forget your Hydration vest as we are now in the triple digits out this way.

I believe the manufacturer emphasis using LITHIUM batteries. Could that have been it?

Nope. It came with the batteries (Energizer Lithium 8x), and I bought a couple extra packages for the trip, and had opened one, and replaced the ones that came with it.

All,

Heading out on my ride Friday morning. I'm going to try real hard to leave San Ysidro around 330am as I'm thinking of riding all the way to Redding CA the first day, and make this first leg a 2 day transit vice 3 days; will just have to see how I feel as I approach Woodland as to whether to push on or not. Blog has been updated, and Jack has posted the link under "Links" on the Forum.

Congrats Elliot on getting ready to go. Wish I could do it with you again! My experience is the batteries last 6 - 7 days max. Ride safe and consider early morning starts to beat the heat... at least a little!
