Roads Challenge History

  • The California Roads Challenge was created in 2018.
    • Dennis Even, longtime SCMA member, former SCMA Treasurer, former Chair, CA Adventure Series (Parks and Missions), and recipient of the Legacy Award, developed the CA Roads Challenge with Les Gullery to ride while riders were out visiting Parks and Missions.
    • The concept Dennis Even and Les Gullery (both from Shamrock Road Riders) originally developed consisted of 60 fantastic roads in CA broken down to 20 in the North, 20 in the Central, and 20 in the South of California.  From that inventory of 60, 15 roads were selected, consisting of 5 each from the North, Central, and South areas, to be offered over a four-year period.
    • In years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 a different set of 5 roads was be selected from the inventory so that at the end of a four-year period riders would have ridden all 60 of these fantastic highways.
    • In addition to expanding the Series, a new award titled the CA Triple Crown was created for riders completing the all three rides in the California Adventure Series. This award is similar to the Triple Crown awarded to finishers of three of the major rides.
  • California Adventures Series Milestones:
    • 2008 – California Parks Adventure to ride 24 parks was created by Mitch Friedman.
    • 2011 – California Missions Tour was added by the California Parks Adventure Chairs at the time Logan and Cheryl Olds, and they became the Chair for both rides called California Adventures.
    • 2012 – Riders could include either Parks or Missions in the Triple Crown award given to riders who complete three of the SCMA major rides in one year.  The name changed to California Adventures Series including the California Parks Adventure and the California Missions Tour.
    • 2018 – California Roads Challenge was added to the series in 2018.  The California Triple Crown award was created for riders who completed all three tours in one year.
