Pick from 4 Different Series of Roads in Northern, Central, and Southern California

The image above shows the general locations and the spread of roads in California in the 4 different series you can select from.  The maps are straight from GPS planning software.  Just like the SCMA Best 15 US Roads Tour, our riders explain how they need to ride on many other notable roads to get to the tour selections and how enjoyable the whole run becomes.  You may want to combine this ride with one or both other California Adventures Series (CAS) tours.  Your route planning and navigation skills will be tested.  You can create your routes to complete multiple rides in this series or this ride as part of a plan that could include other SCMA major rides.

You have probably heard about many of these roads from your friends or seen them in the movies or on TV.  Some of them are iconic.

Since 2018

Roam California’s well-known motorcycle roads (and some well-kept secrets).

Choose from 4 Series of Best 15 Roads in Northern, Central, Southern California.

Enjoy the often out of the way roads getting you to the iconic ones.

Combine all three California Adventures in one year to see most of California with trips all year long (and receive CA Triple Crown award).

loader-icon

SCMA has created 4 different groups of memorable stretches of road to add to your riding experiences. Each series has 5 roads in Northern, Central, and Southern California for a total of 15 roads in each series.

The CAS Roads Challenge is self-paced ride and photo tour ride all of the specified sections of roads listed in the series you select in one calendar year. Your total adventure will cover large sections of California. See the Rules tab for more information regarding the CAS Roads Challenge and tour documentation.

Roads Challenge Rules

  • After selecting from Series A, B, C, and D, and after completing your registration:
    • You must ride your motorcycle the entire distances to and from home, and from one end of the road section listed to the other.
    • You may ride the road sections in any order and in either direction.
    • In the event of a road closure, ride to the closure sign to take the photo.
    • On each road collect the following:
      • A gas receipt or store receipt clearly showing the date, time, and location at both ends of each road.
      • A photo of yourself (the registrant) with your motorcycle and a road sign or recognizable landmark to identify the location.
  • Before you can start this event, YOU MUST SUBMIT A RELEASE OF LIABILITY (ROL):
    • ADULT RIDER/PASSENGER
    • MINOR RIDER/PASSENGER RELEASE OF LIABILITY
    • SIGN a Release of Liability form and return it to the SCMA via email or physical mail.
    • Upon receipt of your Release of Liability, you will receive a CLEAR TO RIDE EMAIL or be provided with start materials via physical mail.
  • Registration and riding begin on January 15 and conclude on December 15 each year.  ALL roads must be ridden in one calendar year between January 15th and December 15th, with ride logs submitted no later than December 15th. Each year requires a current Release of Liability form.
  • There are no time extensions for any reason, including weather, mechanical failures, accidents, illness, etc. The year of registration is considered the calendar year of eligibility.
  • There are 2 options for collecting and submitting your records:
  • You may choose to document each visit with your selfie recorded in SpotWalla.  If you take a photo of the receipt on the page in the book and record it in SpotWalla, you could email the SpotWalla records by December 15 to the Ride Chair instead of sending the completed book as described in the next bullet.  Refer to the Electronic Journaling page for more information about SpotWalla.
  • OR, The receipts and photos must be assembled into the Roads Challenge Book and sent to the Chairman of the CA Adventure Series for approval to certify the participant as a Finisher of the Challenge. Submit your completed Roads Challenge Book by December 15 to:

  • Riders who successfully complete the SCMA CAS Roads Challenge will receive a personally engraved plaque to commemorate their accomplishment! Plaques are created at the end of the year and are distributed at the awards banquet, or mailed per request.

Roads Challenge History

  • The California Roads Challenge was created in 2018.
    • Dennis Even, longtime SCMA member, former SCMA Treasurer, former Chair, CA Adventure Series (Parks and Missions), and recipient of the Legacy Award, developed the CA Roads Challenge with Les Gullery to ride while riders were out visiting Parks and Missions.
    • The concept Dennis Even and Les Gullery (both from Shamrock Road Riders) originally developed consisted of 60 fantastic roads in CA broken down to 20 in the North, 20 in the Central, and 20 in the South of California.  From that inventory of 60, 15 roads were selected, consisting of 5 each from the North, Central, and South areas, to be offered over a four-year period.
    • In years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 a different set of 5 roads was be selected from the inventory so that at the end of a four-year period riders would have ridden all 60 of these fantastic highways.
    • In addition to expanding the Series, a new award titled the CA Triple Crown was created for riders completing the all three rides in the California Adventure Series. This award is similar to the Triple Crown awarded to finishers of three of the major rides.
  • California Adventures Series Milestones:
    • 2008 – California Parks Adventure to ride 24 parks was created by Mitch Friedman.
    • 2011 – California Missions Tour was added by the California Parks Adventure Chairs at the time Logan and Cheryl Olds, and they became the Chair for both rides called California Adventures.
    • 2012 – Riders could include either Parks or Missions in the Triple Crown award given to riders who complete three of the SCMA major rides in one year.  The name changed to California Adventures Series including the California Parks Adventure and the California Missions Tour.
    • 2018 - California Roads Challenge was added to the series in 2018.  The California Triple Crown award was created for riders who completed all three tours in one year.
