California Adventures Series: Roads Challenge

Pick from 4 Different Series of Roads in Northern, Central, and Southern California
The image above shows the general locations and the spread of roads in California in the 4 different series you can select from. The maps are straight from GPS planning software. Just like the SCMA Best 15 US Roads Tour, our riders explain how they need to ride on many other notable roads to get to the tour selections and how enjoyable the whole run becomes. You may want to combine this ride with one or both other California Adventures Series (CAS) tours. Your route planning and navigation skills will be tested. You can create your routes to complete multiple rides in this series or this ride as part of a plan that could include other SCMA major rides.
You have probably heard about many of these roads from your friends or seen them in the movies or on TV. Some of them are iconic.

California Adventure Series (CAS): Roads Challenge
SCMA has created 4 different groups of memorable stretches of road to add to your riding experiences. Each series has 5 roads in Northern, Central, and Southern California for a total of 15 roads in each series.
The CAS Roads Challenge is self-paced ride and photo tour ride all of the specified sections of roads listed in the series you select in one calendar year. Your total adventure will cover large sections of California. See the Rules tab for more information regarding the CAS Roads Challenge and tour documentation.
Roads Challenge Rules
In order to complete the Roads Challenge, you will need to submit your records for certification when you are done:
Select a Roads Challenge from Series A, B, C, and D.
Ride all of the 15 roads in the Series you selected in one calendar year.
- You may ride the road sections in any order and in either direction.
- The Roads Challenge includes riding your motorcycle the entire distances to and from home, and from one end of the road section listed to the other.
- Document the start and finish of each road with a selfie and gas or store receipts.
- The selfie would have you, your bike, and the highway number sign. If that becomes problematic a photo of your bike and the highway number sign, or your bike with a sign of an identifiable location such as a park, a fire station or a post office on that road will suffice.
- If you choose to purchase an SCMA Roads Challenge Book to collect your stamps and photos, members can login to this site to purchase our Roads Challenge Book for $50 at the bottom of this page. There is a Login button and a Join button in the upper right corner of the menu visible on each page. There is also a Click Here to Join button available on the Membership link.
- A gas receipt or store receipt should clearly show the date, time, and location at both ends of each road. The dates on the receipts must be the same or within 1 day.
- In the event of a road closure, ride to the closure sign to take the photo and a starting receipt.
- There are no time extensions for any reason, including weather, mechanical failures, accidents, illness, etc.
There are options for collecting and submitting your records that indicate you rode the selected series of roads:
- You may choose to document each road in your Series with your selfie and photos of your receipts recorded in SpotWalla. You would email the link to the ride you created in SpotWalla records to the Ride Chair. The Ride Chair will be able to view the track of the ride and all the pictures that have been embedded. Refer to the Electronic Journaling page for more information about SpotWalla.
- If you purchased the Roads Challenge Book you will be able to mail the completed book to the Ride Chair for review with all the stamps and photos.
- You could also mail or email a ride log with copies of receipts and email a cloud link of the Roads Challenge selfie photos.
When you have completed the ride, members will be able to visit the Roads Challenge Certification tab on the SCMA website and request to have their ride completion certified. We will announce when the certification process, including ordering swag, is ready later this year.
Certified Finishers will be invited to attend Finishers’ celebrations.

Roads Challenge History
- The California Roads Challenge was created in 2018.
- Dennis Even, longtime SCMA member, former SCMA Treasurer, former Chair, CA Adventure Series (Parks and Missions), and recipient of the Legacy Award, developed the CA Roads Challenge with Les Gullery to ride while riders were out visiting Parks and Missions.
- The concept Dennis Even and Les Gullery (both from Shamrock Road Riders) originally developed consisted of 60 fantastic roads in CA broken down to 20 in the North, 20 in the Central, and 20 in the South of California. From that inventory of 60, 15 roads were selected, consisting of 5 each from the North, Central, and South areas, to be offered over a four-year period.
- In years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 a different set of 5 roads was be selected from the inventory so that at the end of a four-year period riders would have ridden all 60 of these fantastic highways.
- In addition to expanding the Series, a new award titled the CA Triple Crown was created for riders completing the all three rides in the California Adventure Series. This award is similar to the Triple Crown awarded to finishers of three of the major rides.
- California Adventures Series Milestones:
- 2008 – California Parks Adventure to ride 24 parks was created by Mitch Friedman.
- 2011 – California Missions Tour was added by the California Parks Adventure Chairs at the time Logan and Cheryl Olds, and they became the Chair for both rides called California Adventures.
- 2012 – Riders could include either Parks or Missions in the Triple Crown award given to riders who complete three of the SCMA major rides in one year. The name changed to California Adventures Series including the California Parks Adventure and the California Missions Tour.
- 2018 - California Roads Challenge was added to the series in 2018. The California Triple Crown award was created for riders who completed all three tours in one year.
