California Adventures Series (CAS): Parks Adventure
The California Adventures Series (CAS) Parks Adventure is a self-guided and self-paced ride and photo tour that involves a visit to each of the 24 selected National Park Service sites in California within one calendar year. See the Rules tab for more information regarding the specific NPS sites and required documentation for your Adventure.
California is fortunate to have more than 35 National Park Service sites and is widely known for its national parks. Yosemite National Park is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 US national parks by visitors, with Sequoia, Lassen, Kings Canyon and Death Valley regularly ranked in the top 20. While the national parks are intended to display and preserve the unique natural features of each area, California also has a number of National Monuments and National Historic Sites such as Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front, and Cesar E. Chavez which capture and provide insight into human accomplishments that shaped the culture of the state and the nation. While you will enjoy each Park, this Adventure does cover the majority of California and getting there will be a large part of the fun. You will also be in the vicinity of many other California attractions, so be aware of your location and leave time for side excursions and activities.
Parks Adventure History
- The California Parks Adventure was the first ride created in what is now called the California Adventures Series in 2008 by the Ride Chair Mitch Friedman.
- This ride was added to list of the American Motorcycling Association’s Grand Tour Events.
- It was designed to be a year-long event consisting of many trips to California’s Parks during the year.
- The concept of a Park’s Passport/Book in order to collect stamps at each park’s visitor center became the standard method, in addition to collecting photos of your motorcycle in front of the entrance, the visitor’s center, or some landmark within the park that is unique to it.
- California Adventures Series Milestones:
- 2008 – California Parks Adventure to ride 24 parks was created by Mitch Friedman.
- 2011 – California Missions Tour was added by the California Parks Adventure Chairs at the time Logan and Cheryl Olds, and they became the Chair for both rides called California Adventures.
- 2012 – Riders could include either Parks or Missions in the Triple Crown award given to riders who complete three of the SCMA major rides in one year. The name changed to California Adventures Series including the California Parks Adventure and the California Missions Tour.
- 2018 - California Roads Challenge was added to the series in 2018. The California Triple Crown award was created for riders who completed all three tours in one year.
Parks Adventure Rules
In order to complete the Parks Adventure, you will need to prepare to submit your records for certification when you are done:
Visit each of the 24 National Parks listed, in one calendar year.
- You may visit the Parks in any order and follow any route you desire.
- The Parks Adventure includes riding your motorcycle from your home to the parks being visited and back to your home.
- Document each visit with a selfie and a Park stamp at each Park visited.
- The selfie would have you, your bike, and the Park landmark. If that becomes problematic, either you or your bike with the landmark will suffice.
- Get a stamp at each Park, on a piece of paper or you may choose to purchase a Parks Adventure Book to collect your stamps. Take a picture of the Park Stamp.
- If you choose to purchase an SCMA Parks Adventure Book to collect your stamps and photos, members can login to this site to purchase our Parks Adventure Book for $50 at the bottom of this page. There is a Login button and a Join button in the upper right corner of the menu visible on each page if you are not currently a member. There is also a Click Here to Join button available on the Membership page.
- The dates on the stamp photo and the selfie must match.
- There are no time extensions for any reason, including weather, mechanical failures, accidents, illness, etc.
NOTE: A number of these Parks may be partially or fully closed during winter. It is strongly suggested to check Park hours and road conditions via the NPS website www.nps.gov prior to your visit.
There are options for collecting and submitting your records that indicate you visited all of the Parks:
- You may choose to document each visit with your selfie and Parks stamp photo recorded in SpotWalla. You would email the link to the ride you created in SpotWalla records to the Ride Chair. The Ride Chair will be able to view the track of the ride and all the pictures that have been embedded. Refer to the Electronic Journaling page for more information about SpotWalla.
- If you purchased the Parks Adventure book you will be able to mail the completed book to the Ride Chair for review with all the stamps and photos.
- You could also mail or email a ride log with copies of Park stamp photos and email a cloud link of the Park selfie photos.
When you have completed the ride, members will be able to visit the Parks Adventure Certification tab on the SCMA website and request to have their ride completion certified. We will announce when the certification process, including ordering swag, is ready later this year.
Certified Finishers will be invited to attend Finishers’ celebrations.
